TGFB1 (TGF Beta 1, transforming growth factor beta 1), also known as LAP (Latency-associated peptide), is a secreted ligand of the TGF-beta family of proteins. TGFB1 is involved in activating a number of signal pathways (including the SMAD family of transcription factors) that regulate gene expression. TGFB1 regulates the inhibition of cell proliferation, and in normal tissues acts as a tumor suppressor. In later stage cancers, increased expression and higher serum levels have correlated with neoplastic progression, cell migration, and angiogenesis.
