AQP4, also known as Mercurial-insensitive water channel (MIWC), is the fourth member of the aquaporin water channel family. This osmoreceptor regulates body water balance and mediates water flow within the central nervous system. It appears to play some specific role in the functioning of skeletal muscles, retina, and auditory system. Contrary to other aquaporin family members, AQP4 is not inhibited by mercurial compounds. The expression of AQP4 is reduced in the skeletal muscles of Duchenne muscular dystrophy syndrome patients. In addition, a dysfunction of the AQP4 may contribute to the development of brain edema; some results indicate that interference with the subcellular localization of this protein may have a therapeutic potential for delaying the onset of this pathological condition.
