GATA-4 is a zinc finger transcription factor that is essential for heart development. In mouse heart development, the first expression of GATA-4 is seen in coelomic epithelial cell of the primitive streak (7-7.5 days). During formation and bending of the heart tube, expression is found in endocardium, myocardium and embryonic structures containing precardiac mesoderm. By the onset of cardiac septation (9 days) expression is present in endocardium, endocardial cushion tissue and myocardium. In humans GATA-4 has been linked to cardiac septal defects.
