p14ARF is one of two proteins transcribed from the gene CDKN2A on chromosome 9 locus p21. p14ARF functions in apoptosis, autophagy and more broadly in tumor suppression via its regulation of MDM2 and p53, where loss of p14arf can inhibit p53 and contribute to survival in cancer cells (pmid: 18199527). Because CDKN2A is frequently deleted, mutated or hypermethylated in a broad range of cancers, evaluating p14ARF status via IHC, elisa or assay can be a useful means of examining cell cycle destabilization and the breakdown of apoptosis in a given cancer.
