Serum Amyloid A1 (SAA, SAA1) is a member of the serum amyloid A family that acts as an acute phase reponse protein and is expressed in response to tissue injury. Increased expression of SAA1 is associated with chronic inflammatory diseases including atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, sarcoidosis, and Crohn’s disease. It is expressed in the normal liver, breast, adipose tissue, brain, and salivary gland.
