TFF1 (trefoil factor 1) is a mucin-associated secreted peptide of gastric mucous cells and plays an essential role in mucosal protection and repair. TFF1 is upregulated in injury, and the secreted peptide plays a role at the epithelial-mesenchymal interface in triggering repair. TFF1 is expressed in a wide variety of carcinomas including colon, lung, pancreas, prostate and breast, and is thought to enhance neoplastic progression through stimulation of cell proliferation, invasion and angiogenesis. In normal tissues, it is expressed in normal stomach epithelium and goblet cells of the GI tract.
