TGFB2 (Transforming growth factor-beta 2) is a cytokine with important functions in embryogenesis, SMAD-pathway gene expression and tenogenesis in mesenchymal stem cells. TGFB2 is thought to stimulate HFSC proliferation, and mice lacking TGFB2 show significant delayed hair follicle morphogenesis. Separately, some gliomas can be treated using TGFB2 inhibitors such as trabedersen. Blocking TGFB2-mediated immunosuppression activates tumor-infiltrating natural killer cells that suppress glioma tumor cell proliferation. Inherited mutations in TGFB2 lead to Loeys-Dietz syndrome and defects of the eye such as Peter’s anomaly. In immunohistochemistry, TGFB2 has moderate extracellular and secretory positivity throughout the central nervous system and prostate, with varied expression in other tissues throughout the body.
