Cytokeratin 8 (KRT8, CK8) is a Type II intermediate filament chain keratin that is expressed in simple glandular epithelia and the liver. Along with KRT18, KRT8 protects the liver from stress-induced injury and apoptosis. Mutations in this gene have been linked to cryptogenic cirrhosis, rhabdoid tumors, chronic pancreatitis and liver disease. It is a component of nuclear inclusions in rhaboid tumors and Mallory bodies in liver diseases. KRT8 is positive in a variety of cancers.
